Education FAQ's - Complaints to the BON About Nursing Programs

How does the BON handle complaints about nursing programs?

There are 2 procedures for handling complaints about nursing programs:

1. Complaints which are submitted to the Board and SIGNED BY THE COMPLAINANT:

  1. Board staff forwards a written acknowledgment of the complaint to the complainant.
  2. Board staff will forward a written notice of complaint to the program director with a deadline date for a written response. A copy or a summary of the complaint will be attached to the written notice, but the name of the person(s) submitting the complaint will be kept confidential.
  3. Board staff will review the written response from the program director.
  4. The program director response, severity of the complaint, and number of complaints may initiate no action, a survey visit, referral to internal and/or external entities and/or initiation of disciplinary action.

2. Complaints which are submitted to the Board UNSIGNED by the complainant:

  1. Board staff will communicate with the program director or coordinator and, if applicable, forward a copy or summary of the complaint to the program director.
  2. The program director response, severity of the complaint, and number of complaints may initiate either no action, a survey visit, referral to internal and/or external entities and/or initiation of disciplinary action.
